Mark 9:2-10 Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain apart by themselves; and he was transfigured before them, and his garments became glistening, intensely white, ...there appeared to them Eli'jah with Moses; and they were talking to Jesus. ...And a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice came out of the cloud, "This is my beloved Son; listen to him." And suddenly looking around they no longer saw any one with them but Jesus only. And as they were coming down the mountain, he charged them to tell no one what they had seen, until the Son of man should rise from the dead. So they kept the matter to themselves, questioning what rise from the dead meant.
Peter didn't want to leave the mountain top experience. He thought they should all stay up on that mountain, rather than coming down to what was waiting below...the likelihood of Jesus' death. The disciples were confused and didn't want to leave the glory of the mountain.
Mountain-top experiences are important. Whatever they are for us, they are not always explainable but they are usually quite meaningful. Not always religious, but usually quite sacred. You are encouraged to reflect on those times when the light of Christ shone on us or around us---when we saw the loved of God or the wonder of Creator in a new way. Especially as we anticipate the Season of Lent beginning, we can reflect on the moments of glory, knowing that those moments can give us strength, but even Jesus himself didn't stay on top the mountain in glory,... he came down to a world who needed him. As God expressed love for his beloved Jesus, so too, God expresses love to each one of us.
You are loved.
